After calibrating the probe tubes and placing them correctly in the ear canal, the hearing aid is fit to a starting algorithm. Speech mapping is then performed using targets like NAL-NL2 and input levels for soft, average, and loud speech. Gain is adjusted until output matches target, usually within a few dB.
