Word recognition testing measures a client’s phonetically balanced maximum (PBmax) by presenting monosyllabic words in quiet and having the client repeat them. It is done after pure tone audiometry and speech recognition thresholds, using recorded, calibrated word lists such as NU-6, W-22, or Maryland CNC. Words are presented at a suprathreshold level, often 25–50 dB SL or a fixed level like 75 dB HL, while avoiding loudness discomfort. Masking may be needed to prevent crossover. All 50 words are usually scored for percent correct, helping compare ear performance and assess hearing ability in quiet.
